  • Munich Public Transport Overview

    Munich’s public transport system is operated by MVV (Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund) and includes U-Bahn (subway), S-Bahn (urban trains), trams, and buses. It is reliable, punctual, and well-integrated.


    U-Bahn Operating Hours

    The U-Bahn (subway) runs daily from approximately 4:00 AM to 1:00 AM. On weekends and public holidays, service continues all night on most lines.

    Trains run every 5–10 minutes during the day and every 10–20 minutes in the early morning and late evening.


    Main U-Bahn Lines and Coverage

    Munich has 8 U-Bahn lines (U1–U8), serving the inner city and surrounding neighborhoods:

    • U1 (Blue): Olympia-Einkaufszentrum ↔ Mangfallplatz

    • U2 (Red): Feldmoching ↔ Messestadt Ost

    • U3 (Orange): Moosach ↔ Fürstenried West

    • U4 (Turquoise): Westendstraße ↔ Arabellapark

    • U5 (Brown): Laimer Platz ↔ Neuperlach Süd

    • U6 (Dark Blue): Garching-Forschungszentrum ↔ Klinikum Großhadern

    The U-Bahn is ideal for quickly getting around central and southern Munich.


    S-Bahn Connections (including Dachau and Airport)

    The S-Bahn network connects Munich to the surrounding region:

    • S2 Line: Direct connection from Munich to Dachau (about 20–25 minutes from Hauptbahnhof).

    • S1 & S8 Lines: Link the city to Munich Airport (Flughafen München). Trains run every 10 minutes, journey takes 35–45 minutes.

    S-Bahn trains operate from around 4:30 AM to 1:00 AM. Night service on weekends.


    Key Tourist Stops by Metro/S-Bahn

    • Hauptbahnhof (Central Station): Major hub for U-Bahn, S-Bahn, regional, and international trains.

    • Marienplatz: Central square with connections to all major lines.

    • Odeonsplatz & Karlsplatz (Stachus): Close to shopping, historical buildings, and museums.

    • Olympiazentrum: For Olympic Park and BMW Welt.

    • Theresienwiese: Access to Oktoberfest grounds.

    • Dachau: Reachable via S2 + Bus 726 to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site.
